Choose Audacity or your phone’s recorder when you need a file to edit or send. Consider whatayarn for recurring listener submissions, SpeakPipe for website voicemail widgets, or telbee for transcription and team replies. Vocaroo may still be enough for an occasional, non-sensitive share link.
What is Vocaroo?
Vocaroo lets you record and share audio in a browser. Its FAQ (opens in a new tab) explains recording, sharing, retention, and deletion. If keeping an occasional recording is your only problem, downloading and backing it up may be enough.

Audacity: record and edit audio on your computer
Audacity (opens in a new tab) is a free desktop recorder and editor for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Use it to record narration, trim a clip, assemble audio, or export a file for an editor.
It requires installation and more learning than a simple record button. That makes it useful for production, but an unnecessary hurdle for a casual listener leaving a question. It is not a hosted submission page or inbox.
Keep the project and the playable file separate
Audacity’s saving and exporting guide (opens in a new tab) distinguishes an editable project from exported audio. Save the project for future edits; export a normal audio file for someone who needs to play or import it.
A producer might download a listener message, edit a working copy in Audacity, and export the selected clip. That is a manual handoff, not an automatic inbox integration.
A phone recorder: make a file before choosing where to send it
For your own recording, start with the app already on your phone. Apple’s Voice Memos sharing guide (opens in a new tab) covers sending audio through AirDrop, Mail, and Messages. Android recorder and export options vary by device.
This can suit a field note or a listener who wants several takes before submitting. Check the recipient’s preferred format and delivery method, and keep the original until they confirm it plays.
whatayarn’s separate free browser voice recorder also creates a downloadable file. It does not automatically submit that recording to a podcast’s inbox.
whatayarn: collect recurring listener submissions
whatayarn gives listeners a reusable page to record or upload audio, with an inbox for the creator to review and download it. Share the hosted page without maintaining a website, or use an iframe embed where supported. The embed is not a floating voicemail widget.
The current plans are:
- Free: one page, 25 lifetime messages, and up to 60 seconds per message.
- Creator: up to five pages, unlimited messages, and recordings up to 10 minutes. USD 19 monthly or USD 180 annually, equivalent to USD 15 per month.
Deleting messages does not reset the Free allowance. Creator adds custom forms, styling, and analytics, but public pages retain whatayarn attribution.
Where it is not a replacement
There is no native transcription, voice-reply conversation, or shared team-assignment inbox. If those are essential, another option may fit better.
whatayarn is not an editor or a permanent archive either. You still need to review publication permission, download selected clips, and back up production files.
SpeakPipe: put voicemail on your website
SpeakPipe’s FAQ (opens in a new tab) covers hosted voicemail pages, inline and dialog widgets, downloading messages, and voice replies when the sender provides an email address.
Its voicemail plans (opens in a new tab) include:
- Free: unlimited messages within 100 MB, with a 90-second recording limit.
- Gold: five-minute recordings and 50 GB at USD 15 monthly or USD 144 annually.
- Premium: ten-minute recordings and 500 GB at USD 45 monthly or USD 432 annually.
The annual equivalents are USD 12 for Gold and USD 36 for Premium. Unlimited message count does not mean unlimited storage.

telbee: handle voice messages as conversations
telbee’s pricing table (opens in a new tab) lists transcription, voice replies, and higher-tier collaboration. It is worth considering when producers need to skim transcripts, assign messages, or continue a conversation.
Free includes 60 voice minutes and 60 transcription minutes monthly, one-minute recordings, and one month of history. Paid recording limits extend to 15 minutes.
Starter costs USD 18 monthly or USD 162 annually; Pro costs USD 30 monthly or USD 270 annually. Their annual equivalents are USD 13.50 and USD 22.50 per month. Paid voice and transcription allowances have fair-use conditions.
Starter does not include every upload or collaboration feature. Check the tier, users, and storage history your team needs; the telbee comparison explains those differences.
Compare the handoffs, not just the record button
Think through one contribution from invitation to edited episode. A listener needs to understand the prompt, send audio, and know it arrived. You need to identify the submission, review it, and give the editor a usable file.
Questions to ask before switching
Can listeners use their usual devices and browsers?
Does the plan allow the recording length you invite?
Can you collect the context you need without unnecessary personal information?
Can the editor download a playable file and identify its submission?
What limits new submissions: message count, storage, or minutes?
What happens to audio after deletion, downgrade, or cancellation?
For confidential material, suitability comes first. Vocaroo’s privacy policy (opens in a new tab) cautions against that use, and another service’s paid plan does not prove confidentiality. Read the privacy assessment before relying on link access.
Test one complete submission before switching
We have not run this acceptance test on competitor accounts. Use non-sensitive audio to check your own shortlist:
- Prepare two recordings: a short question and one near the intended limit. Include an existing file if uploads matter.
- Open the page as a listener: check the prompt, permission request, required fields, review step, and submission confirmation.
- Follow the audio into production: find it in the inbox, download it, and open it in your editor. Test replies or assignment separately.
- Record a concrete result: for example, “the downloaded file opens in our editor,” or the specific step that failed.
Update show notes, your website, social profiles, and reusable episode templates. Switching services does not automatically redirect old Vocaroo links or import recordings.
What should you choose?
Keep Vocaroo for occasional sharing if it still fits. Choose a local recorder for files you produce, or a collection tool for recurring audience submissions.
If whatayarn matches your needs, create a listener page and complete the submission test before promoting it.
